The Reader

April 29, 2009

Alyafawi We find it very common to see a large proportion of inhabitants in London, New York and other major Western world cities frantically reading away whatever reading material they'd laid their hands on while in transport from A to B, whether in the train, bus or other moving vehicle. While waiting at the traffic light just after the mini roundabout by Cafe Donner in Rabieh, this taxi driver was reading the morning paper. "Inspiring" and "Impressive" were the words that immediately came to mind. Instead of dangerously racing the Jordanian streets, let's have a reading contest race. I'm confident this taxi driver would be among the finalists if not the gold medallist. It seems that Rana Dajani's efforts with children (See "Become a Trainer For We Love Reading") has been contagious to adults.

When expression is not enough

April 28, 2009

Nadine Touqan Given the rise in tragic situations with women and youth, and the desperate behaviour of men, women and society in general - all leading to the demise of the family unit and our human values, it's probably high time to up the ante. This country is way too small to be falling apart so badly. There is no excuse for ignoring human-centric needs. Yesterday I received emails from GOs, NGOs & RNGOs about an Amman gathering on the evening of the 29th for expression against child abuse triggered by the story of Yazan. While a gathering for artistic expression for a few hours may help soothe some souls momentarily, I must wonder what kind of impact towards action and change will result. IMHO it is not enough to gather and express. Isn't it a tired tactic? And then what? (more…)...
