Taman Banat, celebrating “Woman’s International Day”

As I stood waiting in line, I thanked God that I reserved tickets in advance; I saw many people asking to pay just to stand on the sidelines of Al Balad theatre or sit on the floor to watch the multidisciplinary performance “Taman Banat” (Eight Girls). As you go up the stairs, you see a woman placing handicrafts on the steps asking others not to step on them, then in the corner you see two women cutting newspapers into long stripes and covering themselves with them. Elsewhere at Al Balad theatre you see a woman with a look of mourning being painted with black. You hear voices from the amplifiers calling out words ending with Aat – the feminine plural format in Arabic. Then the show starts…
طفلة صغيرة تحمل مرآة، تنظر لنفسها وتغني، تريد ان تصبح نجمة. تبدأ الأصوات بمطاردتها ووضعها في قوالب وأطر. تبحث عن قالب تقيس ماهيتها به.. قد يكون الفرق بينها و بين الرجل، أو أقوال الآخرين لها.. وتعمل ما في وسعها لتعيش وفق الأطر التي تفرض عليها. تًجمل نفسها، و تتحمل ألام المخاض الذي ربما لم يكن بإرادتها، وإذا ولدت بنتا ترى أنها افعى. تحب تعشق وتندم وتتعذب … و حتى في هذا العشق تقسوا على نفسها المشتاقة والنادمة … او تبني أسوارا تحميها بعد تجربة فاشلة … تقيس مشاعرها عبر المعجم الذي تحمله العرافة أو الحكيمة المتهكمة كإطار وتعرف لنا انواع الحب.
تسمع أن الحب ينتظرها، هل يكون الحب موتها؟ بين الحين والآخر تبحث عن طفولتها. تعمل. تحاول قدر استطاعتها …قد ينشغل عنها او يتهمها بالتقصير.يقسوا عليها المجتمع ويحاكم رغبتها بالتعبير عن نفسها…تريد الغناء فيلومها ويقول :وابنتك ؟ تغني تريد تحقيق ذاته …تحلم الطفلة تريد أن تصبح نجمة …تلحق اللعبة …فتجد المرأة نفسها أمام المرآة و قد أختفت الطفلة وما أرادته. تخشى الموت وعبثية حياة لم تعشها كما أرادت. تحزن و تغني. تبحث عن تعريف لكينونتها بالمعجم “المرأة” – “لحريم”.
تقارن نفسها بالرجل … .تبحث عن كيف تتكامل مع ذاتها …تقبلها بشرها وخيرها.
“تمن بنات” عمل مسرحي متنوع جماعي مشترك من “اات” جاء مصدقا لإسمه… حيث تظهر مساهمة كل واحدة من الفنانات الثمانية بفنها المتميز وتملكها للفكرة عبرعدة مشاهد قصيرة متنوعة تتساءل عن كيفية رؤية المرأة لنفسها وبحثها عن التكامل في أماكن مختلفة وخضوعها لحكم الآخرين لها ومقاييسهم التي تؤطرهذه الرؤية.
Taman Banat is a multi-disciplinary collaborative performance from “Aat”, the Network of Women Artists in Jordan. It explors the meaning and idiosyncrasies of being a woman, the role society imposes on her, her search for completion, the heart break that entails letting go of the past and re-discovering herself, and how she finds what she was looking for in an unexpected place.
The acting and dancing scenes were interlaced by music, singing and definitions from the dictionary that determine the way a woman would define herself based on what others think.
The wonderful acting, singing and dancing gave the scenes artistic richness and succeeded in representing vital aspects such as beauty, love, aging, motherhood etc.. in which a woman would see herself within the frames society imposes on her.
رغم إبداء الجمهور إعجابهم بأداء فريق العمل المتنوع الصادق وموضوع المسرحية. بيد انني لم استطع أن أشاركهم هذا الشعور فقد وقفت حائرة
Although the audience seemed fascinated by the cast’s performance…I felt disturbed , confused and unfulfilled.
أحسست بالانزعاج والتشتت… وعدم الاكتفاء…ربما استطعن تحريك احاسيس أعمق. بصراحة ربما توقعت أكثر أو اردت أكثر.
Maybe that was the purpose of the play to raise questions …to keep us bothered… to make us want more.
We met with Lana Nasser and Toleen Touq – very impressive energetic artists, clearly passionate for their cause and two of the co-founders of “Aat”.
Q: Tell us about “Aat” what is it and what does it stand for?
Aat comes at the end of regular plural feminine nouns in Arabic.
It’s the name we chose for our network , The Network of Women Artists in Jordan which doesn’t only involve Jordanian Artists but also includes other Woman artists from different parts of the region as well. Aat aims to promote creative self expression through multiple art disciplines to raise awareness on gender issues.
Q: Where did the idea of this performance come from?
A: The Idea of “Taman Banat” was the result of our team’s mutual work as we got together during a day’s retreat at al Ghour each contributed her own idea and performance, then we had to gather ourselves from all over . Some had to travel and some were staying abroad in Dubai and Paris, but we made it happen .
Q: Why did you use Arabic and English in the play?
A: We wanted to reach all types of audience and in Amman has also a bilingual feel and each language tells the same thing in its style.
Q: Did the performance cover all aspects of the struggle women face?
A: It wasn’t our intent to cover all women’s issues but maybe we covered the most vital ones like love, building walls, aging and her right of self expression etc. and at the end how would she fulfill herself by looking within instead in the mirror the community impose on her .
Q: At the end I felt that I wanted more and that something is missing so, how would you answer to that?
A (smiling): We think it is good that you wanted more.
س: حدثونا عن أت ومن أين جاءت التسمية؟
ج: آت جمع المؤنث السالم
تهدف آت “شبكة الفنانات الاردنيات” الى تشجيع و توسيع نوافذ التعبير الابداعي عن النفس والتفكير الناقد والرمزي و التوعية لقضايا المرأة من خلال عروض فنية وورش عمل ،و تشجيع التواصل و التعاون و تبادل الأفكار بين الثقافات.
س :كيف جاءت فكرة هذا الأداء؟
ج: ان اقامة اسبوع كامل يحتفي بيوم المرأة العالمي يتخلله مهرجانات وندوات ونشاطات فنية كانت هاجس لنا منذ تأسيسنا شهرتشرين الثاني2009 …كانت “تمن بنات احدى” هذه الفعاليات
س: لماذا استخدمتم العربية والانجليزية معا في العرض؟
أردنا ان نصل أكبر شريحة ممكنة من الجمهور عن طرق ازدواجية اللغة بالاضافة الى أن مانخبره باللغة الانجليزية نعيد إخباره باللغة العربية والعكس صحيح لكن بطريقة تتناسب مع اللغة.
س: هل غطى العرض جميع أوجه الصراع التي تواجه المرأة؟
ج:لم يكن هدفنا ان نغطي جميع جوانب صراع المرأة للتخلص من القوالب التي وضعها المجتمع بها بل اردنا التركيز على بعض الجوانب الاساسية في رحلتها لادراك ذاتها مثل الحب والعيب والحق في التعبير عن الذات الخ
س: شعرت في نهاية العرض بأن هنالك شيء ناقص وأنني أريد المزيد، ما تعليقكم؟
ج (ابتسمتا): نعتقد أنه شيء إيجابي أنك أردت المزيد.
