Events in Amman, January 23 – 29

الأحد 23 كانون الثاني 2011

This week’s highlight is the theater performance “Lily White,” written and performed by three of the most exciting emerging talents in Jordan’s theater scene: Ban Majali, Ahmad Massad, and Haya AbdelRaheem, and directed by Haya AbdelRaheem, supervised by Lana Nasser.

The Jordanian Plastic Arts Association organizes a forum on Poetry and Painting, with different events throughout the week including a poetry night at Orfali Gallery and an exhibition that pays tribute to poets Arar and Mahmoud Darwish.

The agenda also includes a photography exhibition by Linda Al-Khoury at the French Cultural Center, and an exhibition of Graffiti in Gaza at the National Gallery of Fine Arts, part of the Festival of Alternative Arts. The festival, which continues through January and February, includes a debate on life in Gaza on Tuesday, a book signing on Wednesday, and a screening of the documentary “Still Alive in Gaza” tonight.

The Royal Film Commission hosts the second Ismailia Film Festival days in Amman, presented by renowned Egyptian film critic Kamal Ramzy, featuring a selection of short films over three nights. You also have Amman’s regular live music; from classical Arabic favorites by Bayt Al-Ruwwad on Wednesdays, to oldies and blues by the Amman Jazz Band on Sundays, and Jazz/Funk by Yacoub Abu Ghosh and the Stage Heroes on Tuesdays. This week’s music calendar includes a classical symphony orchestra and a classical duo recital.
