    How Proud we are?!!! #Sarcasm

  • Nkilany

    This is really sickening

  • Tarawnah

I understand that sarcasm and cynicism that some people feel towards this piece of news, but I personally don’t mind it. This wasn’t really a “Jordan” attempt, but an attempt made by Jordanians out of an individual initiative. There have been Guinness attempts made on a state level which I thought were idiotic (biggest popcorn, or birthday card to the King, huh?) – however this attempt was made by private citizens, so I don’t think it’s right to put the achievements of an entire nation (or lack thereof) on their shoulders.

More importantly, this was done with a cultural and political goal in mind – it wasn’t just about making a falafal, but preserving something that is a part of Arab heritage, which Israel and its supporters have done well to erode over the years and claim as their own. From falafal, humus, and pita bread, to music and various other elements that define our culture and heritage. These are things that require preservation, and there is a cultural battle that is being waged just as there is a military, economic, political, and intellectual battle being waged.

While there’s little the average Arab citizen can do about these various battles under their current political leadership – they can, at the very least, fight the cultural battle, and keep the line.

    That’s just my two cents.

      Wrong.

We don’t know who made it, only that it was made by ‘Jordan’ (at least in the headlines). Had it been an individual attempt and stayed that way then the personnel involved need be praised, but as it is, all news sources attribute the accomplishment to ‘Jordan’ which gives it a label of a political and national accomplishment.

      • Tarawnah

Well, aside from the fact that your essentially saying: because our local media reported it as such then therefore it’s fact – I would argue that this was an attempt made by, and organized by, the Landmark Hotel. Those who organized the first record at the Santa Clarita Valley Jewish Food were not doing it in the name of the United States of America, nor did the media report it as a political and national accomplishment of the United States of America or Israel for that matter. It was managed by (as far as I can tell) private citizens.

The same thing goes here. If local media wants to call this a “political accomplishment for the Kingdom of Jordan” then that’s their own misrepresentation.

If our heritage is food, we have some work. But you have a good point, it’s a nice gesture. It’s, I think, a question of priorities that caused the cynicism. The cultural battle is the last battle, not the first one.

    • Tarawnah

Tareq, note that I didn’t say our entire heritage is based on food – I said, it, along with many other things, are part of our heritage and culture, just as they are in every single country in the world. From China to Italy – food is a part of heritage and culture. So we’re no different.

As for priorities - I understand your point of view, but I kind of see things differently. When a country is under occupation by an aggressor there are battles waged on multiple fronts at multiple times. We are always concerned with the Israeli military, but one should note that this is a country that does wage battles on these multiple fronts – politically, militarily, economically, and culturally. Those looking to defend the line need to react to all these fronts. My argument was/is that the cultural front is the one in which we, as citizens, have almost complete control over. It’s not subject to our governments’ control or censorship.

I would love to see the political front being held, but with that being in the hands of non-representative leaders, one shouldn’t surrender all the battles – especially if there’s something they can do about it.

I hope we will do more significant achievements in the future, but i think we should get into the habit of celebrating our achievements, no matter how silly they are, because it is a even though it is a minute step forward, it is at least a step in some direction.
