The average carbon dioxide that a Jordanian citizen emits annually is 3.6 metric tons ( according to UN Statistics Division). A Dutch citizen emits 10.3 metric tons annually. In other words the Dutch individual pollutes our fragile earth tree times more than a Jordanian individual does. This means that Holland with it’s 17 million inhabitants emits 178.5 million metric tons annually of carbon dioxide, while Jordan emits 21 million tons.

In simple calculations, Holland is polluting the world more than 8 Jordans combined. And if we remember that Holland is less than half the size of Jordan in area, we find out that each square kilometer in holland is pollution the earth 16 times more than a suare kilometer in Jordan.

This scandellous gap of carbon footprint between the two countries may explain the current obsession of the Dutch embassy in Amman to coverup the basic facts, with consistently “greenwashing” itself. But let’s face it, there is an accumulative environmental debit that Holland owes the less polluting countries like Jordan, a bebit too big to be covered up with obtaining certificates of green buildings, joining conferences, and other media gimmickry.

With the facts mentioned above, the current obsession of the Dutch embassy in Amman to market is’s building’s green solutions remains only a futile public relation exercise of not good enogh to convince the increasingly exposed population of the region.

It might be more honest to humanity and mother earth if the Dutch first fix their carbon emission numbers, before outsmarting us with installing couple of energy-saving lightbulbs and some solar panels on the roof of their embassy in Amman Jordan.

Do you realize what you are saying? Making an effort is much better than sitting there grumbling about people who are. Unless you want the Dutch to live in igloos powered by bonfires for most of the year, I can imagine their CO2 emissions from heating buildings would be MUCH MUCH higher than Jordan.

CO2 emissions also depend on the amount of time a country invests in gathering these statistics and the margin of error. How is the UN measuring these stats in Jordan? With the suffocating black smoke coming from over half of Jordanian vehicles and the dense smog over the city, obviously regulating emissions goes by the wayside. Also, keep in mind that many GREEN restaurants and cafes that open up in Jordan have a high risk of going out of business just because the average Jordanian cannot sit for an hour-long meal in a smoke-free space without having a cigarette or hookah, and there are not enough NON-smoking clients to keep the business afloat. I know many businesses that have had to cancel out everything that made them green just so they have enough customers.
