Jordan Theater Festival, a Talk on Migrant Workers, and More In Amman This Week

This week, Makan Art Space hosts researcher and translator Thorayya El-Rayyes to talk about migrant workers in Jordan. The talk include an overview of labour policies in Jordan that serve to create a docile pool of migrant labour outside the framework of mainstream labour rights. El Rayyes will also trace the influence of regional oil economies as well as neoliberal economic policies that have enabled the creation of this pool of marginalized migrant labour and its effects on the local labour force (Tuesday, 6:30 pm).

The 21st Jordan Theater Festival continues in The Royal Cultural Center throughout the week. This week will see plays from Jordan, Morocco, Algeria, Palestine, Kuwait, Oman, and UAE. Shoman Foundation will present the 2010 Indian film “Peepli Live.” The film tells the story of an impoverished farmer’s threat to end his life in the lead up to state elections in his village, inviting attention from politicians and media (Tuesday, 6:30 pm).

Ann Mary Jaser’s “The Salt of This Sea” will be screened at Darat Al Funun. The main character, leaves America to recover her grandfather’s savings that were frozen when he was exiled in 1948. Slowly, she discovers the reality around her through her friendship with Emad, a Palestinian whose ambition is to leave forever (Tuesday, 6:30 pm).

Za+ed Na-es, the musical project of Basel Naouri, Ammar Urabi and Amjad Shahrour, will play twice this week at Blue Fig. The band compliments change and variety in music and focuses its musical style around our changing musical preferences and not limit itselves to a specific genre. Cover charge: 5 JDs (Monday and Tuesday, 9:00 pm).
