Flamenco Dance, Talks, Farmers Markets, and More in Amman This Week

Perhaps Spring hasn’t arrived in full force yet, but Amman’s cultural agenda is already getting packed and you have plenty to get you out of the house this week.

If you want to explore local, organic, and artisanal food, there are three farmers markets happening this weekend; the Farmers Market at Safeway on Thursday afternoon (4pm – 10pm); the Farmers and Handicrafts Market near 3rd circle every Saturday (9:30 am – 3:30 pm), and Souq El Sodfeh at Khordah in Jabal Luweibdeh, this Saturday from noon till 7:00 pm.

Darat Al-Funun is hosting photographer Omar Attum to talk about his new book “Sinai: Landscape and Nature in Egypt’s Wilderness”, and discuss how to create a vision for desert photography. (Tuesday at 6:30 pm).

Maha Yahya, senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, will be giving a talk titled “Arab Faces and Perceptions of Injustice” at the Columbia University Middle East Research Center. (Wednesday at 6:30 pm). Yahya’s work focuses on intersection between socio-economic challenges and political transitions. Prior to joining Carnegie, she was the Chief of the Participatory Development and Social Justice Section at UN-ESCWA and spearheaded strategic initiatives at the Office of the Executive Secretary.

As part of its weekly film screenings on Tuesdays, the Shoman Foundation is screening the Estonian-Georgian film “Mandariinid”, which was nominated for an Oscar in the best foreign-language film category this year. It takes place during the war in Georgia in 1992, in a small village where Estonian farmers had settled. Most people left when the war broke except two brothers, who find themselves taking in people wounded in the bloody conflict. (Tuesday at 6:30 pm)

Three of the world’s top Flamenco dance troupes are coming to Amman this week for a “Gala Flamenca” at the Palace of Culture (Friday at 6:00 pm). Directed by Ángel Rojas of Nuevo Ballet Español, Gala Flamenca celebrates the intensity and passion of Spain’s unique, national dance expression, the excitement heightened by its fiery song and music performed by a company of world class. Bala Feesh, an independent initiative to showcase Jordanian and Arab musical talents, led by musician Hana Malhas, returns with a performance by Lebanese band “Postcards” and Jordanian band “Za’ed Na’ed”, at Kharabeesh space. (Saturday at 7:30 pm).
