Spanish Suite, Jazz Fusion, Classical Arabic Music, and More in Amman This Week

April 7, 2015

This week’s events calendar includes more concerts than usual, so music fans will have some tough choices to make.

Renowned Spanish pianist Pablo Galdo will perform the complete “Spanish Suite” by I. Albeniz, which represents various cities in Spain with their characteristic sounds and rhythms. The concert is free of charge and will take place at the Royal Cultural Center, on Wednesday April 8, at 7:30 pm.

Also on Wednesday, Jordanian band Zaman Al Zaatar is playing a concert at Montage (at the Royal Film Commission), at 9:00 pm. Tickets are for JD5. You can listen to some of Zaman Al Zaatar’s music and download their latest album here.

To make your choice on Wednesday even harder, the Amman Arab Music Ensemble led by Sakher Hattar and the Choir of the National Music Conservatory led by Linda Hijazi are performing a concert titled “Jordan’s Spring”, featuring all-time Arabic favorites by Warda, Abdel-Halim Hafez, Wadih Al-Safi, and others. (At the Hussein Cultural Center, 7:30 pm. Tickets JD10).

On Tuesday, the Royal Film Commission is organizing a screening of Jordanian director Amin Matalqa’s latest film “Strangely in Love”, which is a comedy based on Fyodor Dostoevsky novel “White Nights”. (At Rainow Cinema, 7:00 pm).

Also on Tuesday, Darat Al-Funun is hosting a screening of the Italian film Salvatore Giuliano, which takes place in the 1950s. The famous Sicilian bandit Salvatore Giuliano’ s bullet-riddled corpse is found facedown in a courtyard in Castelvetrano, a handgun and rifle by his side. Local and international press descend upon the scene. Shot in a neo-realist documentary, non-linear style, the film ‘Salvatore Giuliano’ (1962; Francesco Rosi) presents a legal brief against the political establishment and underworld figures who manipulate Giuliano and then eliminate him when he is no longer of any use. (Tuesday at 6:30 pm).

The Goethe Institute in Amman is organizing a series of film screening called “Global Music”, telling stories about music from around the world. The first screening will take place on Wednesday April 8, at 7:00 pm, of the German documentary “Crossing the Bridge. The Sound of Istanbul”.
