Two exhibitions will open at Darat al-Funun this week: ‘Portals’ by Jordanian architect Sahel al-Hiyari and selected works by Samah Hijawi, co-founder of Makan Art Space. Al-Hiyari will present three site-specific sculptural installations at the Main Building. Hijawi will be showcasing a selection of works from her ongoing multimedia project that investigates political influences in aesthetics in the Arab world from the 1960’s – 1980’s: ‘Chicken Scribbles and the Pigeon that Looks like a Frog’ and an installation titled ‘It all Collapses in the Living Room.’ (Tuesday at 6:00 pm)
Jazz artist Vahagn Hayrapetyan will be performing live at Oobé throughout the week. Hayrapetyan is one of the most popular and celebrated Armenian jazz pianists and composers. He graduated from the Tchaikovsky special music school (Yerevan State Conservatory) and studied with Jazz bebop legends Barry Harris and Frank Hewitt in New York. (Daily at 8:30 pm)
More than a 100 musicians from the Amman Symphony Orchestra and the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra of Harvard University will perform in a benefit concert of classic masterpieces including Violin Concerto by Beethoven and Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. All concert proceeds will go to supporting the National Music Conservatory’s outreach programs for underprivileged youth in Jordan. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will go to support the UNHCR aid to to Syrian refugees. (Monday at 8:00 pm at the Palace of Culture/Hussein Sports City)
The Rotaract Club is organising its annual charity concert this year to support blind people in Jordan. The concert, titled “Voice of the Light,” will be featuring Autostrad, the duo Shadi and Firas and a performance by Dance Mania Academy. (Wednesday at 7:00 pm)
The Franco-Arab Film Festival will kick-off this week with two screenings on Thursday, Line of Sight and Populaire, the former a Jordanian production and the latter French. On Friday you have the screening of “Je vous ai compris” (I understood you), a French movie produced using a distinctive animation technique, in which animators trace over footage frame by frame for use in live-action and animation. The film is set in the late 1950’s and revolves around the events of the Algerian War of Independence. The French movie, Rengaine, is also screening on Friday.
The Seventh Jordanian Short Film Competition will be held at the Rainbow Theater on Saturday as part of the Franco-Arab Film Festival. The audience will get to be the judge and vote for the best short-feature film and best short-documentary film.
The 1966 film production, Fahrenheit 451, will be screened at Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation on Tuesday. The movie is a rendition of Ray Bradbury’s classic book that tells the story of Guy Montag, a fireman living in a totalitarian society in which members of his profession carry out book-burning campaigns.
