Events in Amman, January 9 – 15

This week’s highlight is the Festival of Alternative Arts, organized by the Swedish Embassy in close cooperation with Jordanian and International institutions and independent artists, to showcase and discuss graffiti and other urban alternative art expressions. It will continue through January and February. This week’s program includes a concert by El Morabba3, Hana Malhas, and Ahmad Farah, and an Urban Art Hunt by Hamzet Wasel.

Starting Sunday and for three days, Makan Art Space is hosting “Film and Foto”, a screening of films on, about, and around the still image, organized by artists Oraib Toukan. British Film “Route Irish”, which was partly filmed in Jordan, will be screened at the Hussein Cultural Center on Wednesday. You also a Tunisian film at the Shoman Foundation on Tuesday, and films by students of the Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts at the Hussein Cultural Center on Saturday.

There’s also plenty of live music this week; Canvas hosts a concert of blues and oldies by the Amman Jazz Band Sunday night, and their weekly jazz/funk night by Yacoub Abu Ghosh and the Stage Heroes on Tuesday. The Amman Arab Music Ensemble pays a tribute to Farid Al-Atrash on Monday. Bayt al-Ruwwad perform their weekly concert of classical Arabic music on Wednesday, and the band and choir of the Jordan Music Academy present a concert of Arabic music on Thursday.

The calendar includes a number of exhibitions opening this week, and an intervention by artist Samah Hijjawi at the National Gallery of Fine Arts titled “This work does not mean anything to me”; Musings around art and art- discourse. There’s also an evening of poetry at the writers association, theater, more films, book events, and choir auditions. So read on, and have a great week.
