Play 99.6, Spin Jordan

It takes a village: Gaza campaign

After an event of this magnitude, it necessary to reflect on what happened, and thank those who made it possible.

First, all the people that donated and all the young people that showed up on those rainy streets that night to help load the trucks, and all the people that went to the warehouse in the middle of no where and in the middle of the night, to help unload. You are too many to name by name but gratitude goes to you.

Second, Aramex.

I can’t say anything except this: had it not been for Aramex calling us up and offering their assistance with the logistics, none of this would have happened. I know when people say something like that it always sounds like an exaggeration at best or pandering at worse, but believe me, this is no understatement. Simply put, none of this, and I mean none of it, could have happened without the support of Aramex. To put a picture in your mind, had it not been for Aramex, there would be a mountain of over 40 tons of food and clothes in the middle of a street. Every single person who has helped us load, sort and package can back me up on that.

I also want to thank the actual Aramex employees that helped out. These guys volunteered to do the work and it was definitely no ordinary volunteering of just showing up for a few hours to lend a quick hand. These guys stuck by us for three days, all through New Years, to sort it all out. They worked with dedication, pride and determination. I have, frankly speaking, never seen something like that coming out of the Jordanian private sector on an individual level. They are too many to name but I’ll make a small attempt, starting with the company’s founder, Fadi Ghandour who offered us anything we needed, to Reem Khouri for helping arrange it, to the marvelous logistics team that worked non-stop, including Raji Hattar, Sudud Qubtan, Suleiman Aqel and Zaid Al-Najjar.

Third, I’d like to thank Cozmo for putting up with us during those few hours. Our campaign sort of hit them out of the blue, which was personally my fault, but I think everything turned out alright. Even after the campaign officially ended people were still dropping off stuff, most of it from the Cozmo supermarket.

Fourth, all the companies that donated lunch and dinner for the warehouse volunteers, including Daya Shawarmeh and Wox Chinese, not to mention the much-needed coffee and tea services from Full Cup Coffee.

Fifth, Nuqul for donating over a thousand boxes to package the goods.

Sixth, the riot police. Yes, these guys don’t usually get much gratitude coming their way from the citizens, but upon discovering what we were up to, they mobilized to direct traffic for a few hours, which was incredibly helpful. It was really gridlocked out there and people are less inclined to honk their horns annoyingly if 30 guys with big guns and batons are standing next to them.

Seventh, all the volunteers who spent their long weekend stuck with us in a warehouse sorting. They were in the hundreds and included teenagers from schools as well as young people from Ruwwad in Jabal il-Nathif.

Eighth, to the radio stations who helped spread the word, including Mazaj FM, Play 99.6, Spin Jordan and Ayam FM, to name but a few.

Ninth, to all the people who kept calling long after the campaign ended, trying to figure out if they can still donate or help in any way. A lot of you ended up coming to the warehouse to sort and pack, which was great.

Tenth, to various contributing businesses including Books@Cafe who donated their place of business as a secondary drop-off point, in support of the campaign, as well as Basem Aggad who donated two of his company’s – Scooter Express – scooters for home pick-ups. Also, Cycling Jordan, the Tareef Club and the folks from Maktoob.

This campaign shows that collectively, we can make a difference. It really does take a village.
