As part of the European Film Festival, MS Action Aid and the Danish Embassy are holding an event for youth in Amman to discuss ways and obstacles of expression in Jordan. The debate will be followed by the Danish Film: Fighter. Present will also be the lead actress from the movie, as she is a professional Kung Fu Fighter in Denmark, and she views her sport as a necessity in her life and a way of personal expression in her society.

This century is all about putting your self out there. How do you express yourself?

The event encourages you to find your preferred way of self-expression and dares to use it. If you already are dancing, doing sports or blogging or if you want to start doing something similar, you might want to attend today.

The event will take place in King Hussein Cultural Centre Thursday 5th at 6pm, followed by the film screening at 8:00 pm.

Renewed Japanese Manga artist Mr. Go Nagai will visit Jordan for two days on 7 and 8 October 2009. He will give two lectures ( one for sudents and staff of Princess Sumaya University@ 11am on 7 Oct) while the other will be open for the public the the RFC as stated here.

Clara Armado
Born in Bracelona; resides in Jordan, attended painting courses in different institutions and schools in Spain, Italy and Mexico. Her work has been exhibited in numerouse art galleries and museums world-wide, where she participated in collective and solo exhibitions.
Clara’s works of art symbolize an artistic challenge, combining the visual expressiveness of the scenery with the use of natural materials and techniques, rooted in Jordan’s land and the sand. The esthetics of the autochthonous natures comes to manifest itself through a plastic language full of pure expressiveness, achieving a one of a kind piece of art that speaks with pure originality and beauty.

ينظر الفيلم الوثائقي “أنا غزة” في البعد التاريخي للهجوم الإسرائيلي العنيف على غزة عام 2008-2009 وتأثيره على فلسطين. الفيلم الذي صوّر في غزة مباشرة بعد العدوان، يسلط الضوء على بعض القصص الشخصية التي قلّما تطرقت إليها وسائل الإعلام، حيث يظهر الآثار النفسية والاجتماعية المحتملة للحرب على سكان غزة على المدى الطويل.

“I Am Ghazza”

42 minutes, short documentary, in Arabic with English subtitles, 2009.

This documentary looks into the historical significance of the brutal 2008-2009 Israeli attack on Gaza, moreover its impact on Palestine. The film, which was shot in Gaza right after the war, addresses some personal stories that were seldom tackled by the media; it shows the potential long-term social and psychological impact of war on Gaza residents.

We are looking for filmmakers who can produce a clip that will be released to mark the one year anniversary of the Gaza massacre.

It is our hope that this clip will remind international audiences of the brutality and effects of so-called “Operation Cast Lead” and the continued illegal siege.

We intend to bombard the media (formal and informal) with this clip using our extensive networks and to organise screenings of the clip as well. Your work will be circulated internationally and locally and your name will be mentioned at every possible occasion. You will be recognised for being part of an initiative to ensure that the people of Gaza are not forgotten.

Ideal length of clip is between 2 to 4 minutes.

I hope this important initiative is of interest to you. If so, please reply by our deadline of 20 September 2009 with a brief proposal outlining your vision of what your clip would consist of, a brief resume, and instructions on how we may view your previous work.

Karim is a 19 year-old cancer patient who has a great passion for horseback riding and dreams of winning his next competition. His dream of competing and winning is shattered when he discovers that his surgery and competition are scheduled on the same day. Karim has to make a choice: either to compete to fulfill his dream or to undergo the surgery which will determine his destiny.

حصل معتز مطر في العام الماضي على منحة لدراسة الماجستير في معهد البحر الأحمر للفنون السينمائية في العقبة، وأخرج خلال فترة دراسته فيلمين قصيرين، كما أخرج هذا العام أول فيديو كليب لأغنية “سلمى” للفرقة الموسيقية الأردنية “جدل

ولد معتز مطر في عمان عام 1985. تخرج من جامعة البتراء حيث درس التصميم الغرافيكي عام 2008. شارك في ورشتين تدريبيتين في صناعة الأفلام نظمتها الهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام بالاشتراك مع جامعة جنوب كاليفورنيا وقام بإخراج فيلمين قصيرين “عنوان قلبي” و “وزير الفستق”، ثم كتب وأنتج وأخرج فيلمه الثالث “سوء تفاهم”.

About Motaz Matar

Motaz Matar was born in Amman in 1985. He graduated from Petra University with a B.A. in Graphic Design in 2008. He made his first short films “Your Way to My Heart” and “Minister of Peanuts,” after participating in two digital film-making workshops organized by the Royal Film Commission in collaboration with the University of Southern California. He later wrote, produced and directed his third short film “Misunderstood”.

During the past year, Motaz Matar was granted a scholarship to continue his studies at the Red Sea Institute for Cinematic Arts (RSICA) during which he directed two short films. This year he wrote, produced and directed his short film “Behind the Door” and he has just finished directing a music video clip “Salma,” by the local Jordanian band “Jadal”.

عن أحمد سمارة

ولد أحمد سمارة، عام 1986 في طولكرم- فلسطين. بدأ شغفه بفن التصوير الفوتوغرافي في سن مبكر وشرع في صناعة أفلام قصيرة بدعم وتشجيع من أصدقائه. شارك بورشة عمل لصناعة الأفلام نظمتها الهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام بالاشتراك مع جامعة جنوب كاليفورنيا عام 2008.

قام أحمد سمارة  خلال هذا العام بكتابة وإنتاج وإخراج فيلمين قصيرين “راحة” و “تخاطر”، و قد حصل فيلمه “راحة” على تنويه خاص في مهرجان الفيلم العربي الفرنسي في عمان.

About Ahmed Samara

Ahmad Samara was born in Palestine in 1986. His love for photography began at an early age and he started making short films with the encouragement and support of his friends.  He participated in the digital film-making workshop organized by the Royal Film Commission in collaboration with the University of Southern California in 2008.

In 2009, Ahmad Samara wrote, directed and produced two short films “Relief” and “Telepathy”. This year, his film “Relief” got special mention in the Franco Arab Film Festival in Amman.

نورما خوري شخصية مثيرة للجدل البعض يراها ماكرة  والآخر قديسة والبعض الآخر مهتزة عقلياً. حازت على الشهرة والثروة بعد نشر كتابها “الحب المحرم” – الذي يتناول موضوع جرائم الشرف في الأردن والذي ذاع صيته عالمياً بعد ترجمته إلى عدة لغات.

في يوليو عام 2004 يكشف مالكولم نوكس – الصحافي المخضرم في “سيدني مورنينغ هيرالد” –  بمساعدة الصحافية رنا الحسيني والدكتورة أمل الصباغ، أن الكتاب ليس إلا من وحيّ خيال الكاتبة. فيلم “أكاذيب محرمة” يعمد إلى تبديد الملابسات المحيطة بخوري وبكتابها.
حاز فيلم “الأكاذيب المحرمة” على جائزة أفضل فيلم وثائقي وعلى جائزة أفضل مونتاج في المعهد الاسترالي للأفلام (AFI) .  كما فاز بجائزة WGA لأفضل سيناريو وثائقي في عام 2008.

“Forbidden Lies” Anna Broinowski, 104 minutes, in Arabic and English, Documentary, Australia, 2007. Norma Khouri is a controversial character: some see her as a thief, others as a saint or a seductress or a sociopath. Khouri won fame and fortune with her “true story” Forbidden Love, about a shocking honour killing in Jordan. The book was a runaway bestseller, translated into multiple languages, and Khouri became the toast of the literary world. That was until July 2004, when esteemed Sydney Morning Herald journalist Malcolm Knox – with the help of the journalist Rana Hussein and the Jordanian activist Dr. Amal al-Sabbagh – exposed her book as a work of fiction. “Forbidden Lies” tries to disentangle all the controversies surrounding Khouri and her book.

In 2007, the film has won the Best Documentary and Best Editing Awards at the Australian Film Institute (AFI). The film also won the WGA Documentary Screenplay Award in 2008.
