As part of the European Film Festival, MS Action Aid and the Danish Embassy are holding an event for youth in Amman to discuss ways and obstacles of expression in Jordan.

Apply here: http://everybodytexts.eventbrite.com/?ref=esfb

UNICEF Innovation and MobileActive.org invite you to attend a three-day workshop on distributed and real-time data collection, monitoring, and visualization of data with mobile technology.

What is this About?
With the ubiquity of mobile technology, data collection and monitoring of key indicators from the ground up by affected populations is now possible. Mobile technology in the hands of people can now be more than a person-to-person communication medium but can be used for capturing, classifying and transmitting image, audio, location and other data, interactively or autonomously.
By involving people in defining and participating in their own data collection, this approach can address significant unmet challenges in large-scale data collection for public health and citizen participation.
In this three-day workshop, we will explore the critical issues, technologies, and architectures involved in collecting and utilizing data-from-below, bringing together the key technology and research leaders on distributed data collection and distribution in the Middle East.

What are the Goals?
An exploration of key issues in citizen-driven data collection in the Middle East. These include technologies, systems, architecture, tools, standards, and people, among others.
Kick-start a regional working group / community around open-source data collection, aggregation and visualization using mobile technology.

Map the landscape in the Middle East of applications/technologies, developers, and key thought leaders around real-time distributed data collection, monitoring, and visualization using mobile technology?
Help UNICEF build a roster of potential partners, possible vendors, academic institutions of interest, and groups or individuals to advance UNICEF regional goals.

Prototype new products or improvements of existing products about distributed data collection.
Please note that the workshop will be held primarily in English (with some Arabic sessions).

More Background
The impetus for the workshop is UNICEF’s national-scale project in Iraq collecting data from various populations about key indicators and use that data to effect policy and programmatic changes that can improve the lives of children.
As part of this work, MobileActive.org, a global community of people using mobile technology for social impact, and UNICEF partnered to explore, with key leaders in the Middle East, critical issues on large-scale, citizen-driven and bottom-up data collection.

Why Attend?
If you are a thought leader representing academia, foundations, civil society organizations and the private sector in the Middle East exploring data collection from the ground up with mobile tehnology, we’d like you to contribute your experiences and knowledge.
If you are a a coder, hacker, or technical expert interested in this space and/or have relevant applications, systems, or prototypes for real-time data collection and analysis, we encourage you to apply!

Apply
Individuals will be recruited by invitation and through a competitive application. Please apply above to participate. We will ask you several questions in a short survey to ascertain your qualifications. We expect participation to be competitive, so please give us as much information as you think is necessary!
We are able to make a small number of scholarships available to participants from the Middle East who would otherwise not be able to attend. If you need a scholarship, please indicate so in the application form.
Please note that the workshop will be held primarily in English, though there will be Arabic-language sessions as well. Please be sure that your spoken English is good if you would like to participate.

Agenda
The workshop sessions will be user-generated in an open spcace format. There will be plenty of opportunities for project presentations, a market-place for real-time data collection tools and apps, mapping of the landscape in the Middle East in this space, and design jams.

We will have nightly dinners at influential thought leaders in Amman, and lots of time to socialize and buiild a community of
practice.

Please apply!

Syopsis
Ramallah this decade. A free spirited woman dancer, Kamar, finds herself the wife of a prisoner, Zaid, and away from everything she loves until she returns to the dance, defying society’s taboos. At the dance Kamar is confronted with Kais, a Palestinian returnee, who has taken Kamar’s role as the head choreographer. Sparks fly between Kamar and Kais, creating more than a passionate, emotional dance for the both of them. Matters become even more complicated when Zaid’s sentence is extended.

At the same time the family’s legal case against the land confiscation faces one obstacle after another and the villagers from the nearby villages are unable to reach the family’s olive groves, placing the annual harvest and consequently the family’s livelihood in danger. And Kamar’s life is thrown into turmoil as she becomes increasingly attached to Kais, and caught in the midst of her desire to dance and breaking the family and society taboos of the prisoner’s wife’s role while life under occupation rages on.

Big successes for Jordanian short films

in Arab and international festivals

Amman, 19 October 2009

Numerous Jordanian films achieved major successes in various International festivals which is a clear indication of the quick pace in the growth of Jordanian cinema and of its reaching international levels.

“My name is Mohammad” won the golden Aleph award in the Short Films category at the Beirut International Film Festival. This short film is an outcome of a workshop that was organized by the Royal Film Commission – Jordan (RFC) in October 2007, in which 10 young Jordanian filmmakers worked side by side with 15 Iraqi filmmakers under the supervision of the Iraqi Director Mohammad Al-Daraji. “My name is Mohammad” tells the story of two Iraqi refugee kids in Jordan. Rania Haddad who accepted the award on behalf of the working team commented: “The film was admired by both the Lebanese and foreign audiences for its humanitarian subject matter and for its high artistic and technical quality, especially since most of those who worked on it were beginner filmmakers”. It is also worth mentioning that Al-Daraji has just finished working on a feature film entitled “Son of Babylon” which was screened at the Middle East Film Festival held in Abu Dhabi and will be screened at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival at the end of the month. This film was developed in 2006 at the Rawi Screenwriters Lab, which is annually organized by the Royal Film Commission – Jordan in Wadi Fenan.

Ten days earlier, two Jordanian filmmakers won awards at the Docudays Film Festival in Beirut. Director Sandra Maadi came in first place with her long documentary film “Perforated Memory”, and Anas Balawi won the Best Short Film Award for his film “God of the House”. It is worth mentioning that “God of the House” was Balawi’s first film and was an outcome of a workshop that was organized by the RFC. Anas Balawi is currently completing his studies at the Red Sea Institute for Cinematic Arts (RSICA) upon receiving a scholarship from the Institute.

“I Am Ghaza” directed by Asma Bseiso also participated at the Ismailia Film Festival which ended on the 17th of October. The film gained the admiration of the Ismailia audience and was screened in several venues as part of the Festival. “I Am Gazza” was produced with the support of the Royal Film Commission – Jordan and was shot entirely on location in Gaza, immediately after the war at the beginning of this year. The film portrays the psychological effect the war left on Gaza’s civilians.

Many other Jordanian filmmakers participated recently in various Arab and International film festivals, including: “High Heels” by Fadi Haddad at the Beirut International Film Festival; the short Documentary “She, the Policeman” directed by Mariam Jomaa – another outcome of an RFC workshop – was screened at the Middle East Film Festival in Abu Dhabi; while “29+1” by Dana Merie and “SMS” by Yahya Abdallah were selected at Tangiers Film Festival in Morocco.
