ahmadinejad

Most European and American countries acknowledged, but refused to congratulate Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. In response, Ahmadinejad said, “We heard that some of the Western leaders had decided to recognize but not congratulate the new government … Well, no one in Iran is waiting for your messages. Iranians will neither value your scowling and bullying nor will they pay attention to your smiles and greetings.”

HM King Abdullah II sent a congratulatory note and “wished the Iranian nation success and advancement during President Ahmadinejad’s second tenure.” (source)

What is your take on the King’s congratulatory note to Iran?

Just the same road King Hussein religiously followed. King Hussein had waived the Soviet flag in front of the British and Americans as bargaining chip before. Now, King Abdullah, facing the hardheaded Netanyahu, wants more pressure applied on Israel by the Americans, and support from Gulf countries.

It is ok to improve and maintain relations with a string nation like Iran, but we don’t have to show support to a fanatic like Ahmadi Najad. I think this was a clear message to the Jordanian street, you get it?

Well it’s diplomacy, it’s not like there is an official visit. Probably najad sent something over some holiday.

@iraatus, i think you might be on to something there, but Jordan and the US are much closer linked economically and politically than during the times of Hussein. I’m not sure that the current government has that ability.

On other hand, I think it was a smart move to recognize and to congratulate such an important and large player in the region. Whether we want them to be or not.

Ah! Maybe that’s why Ahmadinejad decided to adopt Jordan’s peculiar demonstration of ‘modernity’:

Maybe ‘demonstration’ is too sensitive a word to use. I wonder what we will be adopting from Iran’s ‘democracy’ in return? hmmm

How hypocritical would it be for the King to tell the Iranians that their elections should have been more free and fair when Jordan is yet to witness a free and fair election?
