Events in Amman, December 12 – 18

This is a great week to be in Amman. The Sunny Art Fair opens to the public on Thursday at Zara Center, and for five days brings together a fascinating collection of artwork from ten galleries, an exciting group of independent artists, and curated spaces. It also features interesting talks on topics related to art, including moderated discussions organized by Makan – Sunny Art Fair Branch.

Also this week, award-winning Palestinian author Suad Amiri is in town and will be presenting her latest book “Nothing to Lose but Your Life: an 10-Hour Journey with Murad” followed by a book signing at the Columbia University Middle East Research Center, on Sunday evening. The center is also screening Academy-award winning documentary Man on Wire this Wednesday with a discussion with one of the producers.

Al Balad Theater hosts the theatrical performance Dhakara, which shows the tragic destiny of three great political and intellectual PLO representative , assassinated in the ’70 and ’80 in different European cities. Sleeping Beauty ballet performance returns to the Royal Cultural Center for two nights. The Amman Symphony Orchestra presents a new date with Waltzes this Wednesday with Armenian viola player Vardan Petrosyan. The Jordan River Foundation presents “Voices of Silence”, a play addressing violence against women and girls. Art Matters gallery hosts the first solo photography exhibition by Zayd Sukhun, and on Saturday the cultural festival Guardians of Memory kicks off with a poetry reading followed by a dabkeh performance by Al-Hannouneh.

And that’s not it; you have Czech documentaries at the Royal Film Commission, jazz and funk at Canvas, animation films at Princess Sumaya University, Christmas concerts, and more.
