Amman this week: films and music

السبت 15 شباط 2014

Film lovers are in for a variety of cinematic treats this week. A premiere screening of “My Love Awaits Me by the Sea” is open to the public on Monday (7:00 pm) in Rainbow Cinema in the presence of director Mais Darwazah, producer Rula Nasser, and special guests from Palestine Khaled Hourani, Muhannad Halawani, Samer Hussam. The film is a poetic, first-person essay that chronicles the filmmaker’s first-ever visit to her homeland. A voyage of discovery, encounters, reckonings, and inward drifts guided by Hourani’s drawings and poems, the film contemplates the meanings of belonging, affiliation, and love.

On Tuesday at 6:30 pm, we will feature two films at 7iber Cafe. For more information, click here. Shoman will screen “Tropa Del Elite“, an award-winning Brazilian film by José Padilha (Tuesday 6:30 pm).

Screenings also include Darat Al Funun’s continuing 25th anniversary celebrations with series of short films from North Africa selected by film critic Yazan Ashqar. These short films present various cinematic genres and showcase different social contexts. Films featured include “The Album” by Shiraz Ferradi from Tunisia, and “The Last Passenger” by Mones Khammar from Algeria (Tuesday 6:30 pm).

This week also features diverse performances in Amman. Tuesday night continues to offer live music by local bands: “The Levant Quartet” at Blue Fig (9:00 pm); “Shadi and Firas” at Canvas (9:00 pm); and “Yellow Mellow” at Trader Vic’s (10:00 pm). And on Thursday, “Ayloul” will play in Bargo’s Cafe (8:00 pm).
