Films, Talks, Art Exhibitions, and More in Amman This Week

This week, The Royal Film Commission will screen the Jordanian/Emirati/British documentary Queens of Syria (2014)followed by a discussion with the Film Producer Georgina Paget.  at Rainbow theater. It tells the story of around fifty women, from all sides of Syria’s conflict, forced into exile in Jordan, who came together in Autumn 2013 to create and perform their own version of the “Trojan Women” – the timeless Greek tragedy all about the plight of women in war. (Monday, 7:00 pm).

As part of the movie series “Global Music”, Goethe-Institut screens the German documentary “Sound of Heimat”. The musician Hayden Chisholm, a New Zealander of Scottish descent, travels through Germany, looking for a kind of music the Germans seem to have lost touch with – real folk music. Chisholm and the two filmmakers discover a vibrant, deeply rooted, original and productive music scene with no hint of the stuffy or dead. A far cry from the trash and kitsch that is disseminated by German television shows and request programs, real, authentic folk music still exists (Wednesday, 7:00 pm).

Artist and scholar Ahmed Moustafa gives a talk at CUMERC on The Cosmic Script: Sacred Geometry and the Science of Arabic Penmanship. Moustafa will explain Ibn Muqla’s perfected penmanship and share decades of research on Islamic letter shapes, revealing the sacred geometry that underlines this spiritual art form and its visual meaning (Wednesday, 6:30 pm).

At The British Institute, professor Coralie Pison Hindawi  gives a public lecture titled “What if the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) was Everybody’s Business?”. The concept of Responsibility to Protect, endorsed unanimously a decade ago by all UN member states during the 2005 World Summit, establishes that there exists in international politics a responsibility to protect populations under threat of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and ethnic cleansing. But from Rachel Corrie to the Freedom Flotillas, there are actually countless examples of courageous individuals upon which to build a new, more relevant, interpretation of the responsibility to protect (Monday, 6:00 pm).
