Book Discussion: Bitter Almonds by Lilas Taha

October 7, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

‘So it is good to eat bitter almonds because they make the sweet ones taste even better?’

Join us for a book discussion with the Syrian novelist Lilas Taha to talk about her new novel Bitter Almonds.

Bitter Almonds is a heartbreaking and moving story that brings to life, in stunning technicolor, the real lives of people in countries torn apart by conflict. Bitter Almonds is about displacement and exile, family duty and honor, and the universal feelings of love and loss.

Omar is an orphaned Palestinian born into chaos and compelled by forces beyond his control to find his place in the world. He only has one thing to hold onto: a love that drives him.

Nadia is young and idealistic. Her attempts to be oblivious to the bleak reality in Damascus are thwarted by her cowardly brother. Will she be able to break out of her traditional social mould to create her own destiny?

About the Author:
Lilas Taha is an electrical engineer by training and an advocate for domestic abuse victims. She was born in Kuwait to a Syrian mother and a Palestinian father, and immigrated to the US following the Gulf war. Bitter Almonds is Lilas Taha’s second novel. She lives in Texas.
