Gulf Film Days, Warm Up Jordan, and more this week in Amman

The second edition of the “Gulf Film Days in Amman”, in the presence of the Emirati Director Khalid Al Mahmood, kicks off tonight, organized by the Royal Film Commission in cooperation with the Gulf Film Festival. Screenings will continue until Thursday. On Tuesday, a documentary titled “The Scream” by Khadija Al-Salami from Yemen will be screened (7 pm).

In a country that has little place for a woman’s voice, Yemen – and the rest of the world – was stunned when Yemeni women took to the streets to draw attention to their suffering. Women played an important role in the Yemeni uprisings against dictatorship. From the Yemeni film-maker Khadija Al-Salami, whose films focus on women’s issues and corruption, “The Scream” examines the aftermath of their participation: they hoped for democracy, but what did they ultimately achieve? And more importantly, what are they left with? The film has participated at the Dubai International Film Festival 2012 and was selected at the Muhr Arab Documentary category. Weekly jazz nights are back at Canvas with the Yacoub Abu Ghosh trio featuring Yarub Smeirat on violin and Tarek Abu Kwaik on drums, every Wednesday (9 pm),  performing a big collection of standard jazz, fusion and improv. tunes.

Mahmoud Radaideh (Jadal) & Ahmad Farah (Perfect and Insane) will be playing at Bargo’s within “الدفا عفا | Warm Up Jordan” initiative (8pm). All proceeds will go to the initiative, which is dedicated to raising funds and donations to help provide basic winter needs to the less fortunate. For more information, visit their page here.

This Tuesday will see the opening of Sana Kayyali’s solo exhibition of paintings at Orient Gallery. Kayyali said of her project: “in this series of paintings I have tried to use color and the nature of its blends. Color creates the paintings; each painting is formed as its color develops and grows. There are no borders. The viewer is transformed into a different dimension; mythical, theatrical and reality all blend into one.” Another art exhibit in Amman is Zara Gallery’s hosts “CHAOS”, by Bader Mahasneh. The exhibition will run until Wednesday, November 20th. After months of excavating and hiking through Jordan’s valleys and streams, Bader acquired a large collection of beautiful stones which have been shaped and molded throughout the centuries by nature. Bader works endlessly on each stone using various techniques until he finally reveals their humanistic features and characteristics.
