Classical and Contemporary Music, Franco-Arab Films, Talks, and More

Amman’s cultural agenda always gets packed in the two weeks before Ramadan, and this year is no exception, with exciting concerts, film screenings, talks, and more.

The Columbia University Middle East Research Center hosts a talk by Alfred Stepan titled «The Tunisian Democratic Transition in Comparative Perspective», Monday June 8, at 6:30 pm. Alfred Stepan is Wallace Sayre Professor of Government, the founding Director of the Center for the Study of Democracy, Toleration, and Religion, and the Co-Director of the Institute for Religion, Culture, and Public Life.

The BBC and the British Council host a public debate in Jordan to discuss the relevance and legacy of the First World War today, titled «Redrawing the Map of the Middle East», at the Haya Cultural Center in Shmeisani. (Tuesday June 9, at 6:30 pm).

On Wednesday June 10, the Turkish Embassy and the Jordanian-Turkish Friendship Association are organizing a classical music concert by the Turkish pianist Kenan Tatlıcı, at the Royal Cultural Center, at 6:00 pm.

The Shoman Foundation is organizing two concerts at the Odeon Theater in downtown Amman this week. After a very successful concert last year, the renowned Turkish group Taksim Trio is back to perform on Friday June 12, at 8pm.

On Saturday, Jordanian musician Tarek Al-Jundi will launch his new album in a concert that will also feature Canadian group Ritmo Flamenco. (Tickets are free and available at the Abdel-Hamid Shoman Foundation).

This week, Dozan wa Awtar singers will perform Carl Orff’s beloved «Carmina Burana», accompanied by The Jordanian National Orchestra Association, under the direction of William Culverhouse & Janelle Brown, and featuring soloists Dima Bawab, Charles Stanton and Clay Hilley With Atfal Dozan. The shows will take place Thursday, Friday, and Sunday (June 11, 12, and 14), at 8:00 pm, at the International Academy Amman. (Tickets 25 and 30 JDs).

The Franco-Arab Film Festival runs until Thursday evening with three film screenings daily; one for young audiences at 5:00 pm, and two screenings at 7:00 and 9:00 pm, at Rainbow Theater. The festival will also feature the Jordanian Short Films Competition (Monday June 8, at 8pm), in which the audience will vote for best films.
