Remains of the black city of Umm Al-Jimal (Mother of Camels) in northern Jordan.
The approx. 130 buildings and 15 churches give a fascinating insight into rural life during Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic times.

The town is part of a series of ‘Desert Castles’ east of Amman on the road into Iraq. One of them made it into the UNESCO list of the World Cultural Heritage.

Stitched panorama of five scanned 28mm slides.

Allow me to say that the usage of the term “Medieval” to describe Umm El-Jemal is not correct. This village was built around the 2nd Century AD, so I don’t think it meets with the definition of Medieval, which spans between the 5th and the 15th century and which is considered by historians as a European era.

    The panaorama is beautiful, nonetheless.

  5. This is one of the coolest Jordanian photos I’ve ever seen!

Isam: i think the use of the word “medieval” was metaphorical rather than the literal reference to the middle ages.

Um Jemmal in Mafraq is one of the nicest historical places in Jordan,, but there should be a campaign to preserve this place,,, as black stones of this place have been stolen to build houses or for other purposes!!!!

The borken fence built by the ministry of tourism is not enough,, serious measures should be taken!!
