Syrian, Lebanese, Alegrian and Serbian Films in Amman This Week

This week The Levant Quartet will be playing at Blue Fig, on Monday and Tuesday 9:00 pm (Ticket 5JOD). The Levant Quartet is made up of 4 unique musicians with an intense passion towards performing any genre of music in their own way.

Film screenings of «Free Range» and «Fidai» will be held At the RFC (Monday 8:30 pm). Free Range is based on a true story of a cow that crosses the border from Israel to Lebanon and meets with 16  year old Malakeh and her family. A Lebanese Spaghetti-Western that talks about borders and power between people, religions, cows and UN interventions.

Fidai tells the story of El Hadi, who joined his sister in France and integrated a secret FLN armed group during the Algerian revolution. Settling of scores, attempted murder, hiding, imprisonment and finally expulsion in 1962, his personal journey tells the story of countless ex-fighters for Algerian independence and echoes the current effervescence of the Arab World.

On Tuesday (7:30 pm) Darat Alfunun will be screening the Syrian classical “Al Hudood” (The Border) (1982), as part of the exhibition Rituals of Signs and Transitions (1975-1995) which revives the relationship between different artistic disciplines during that time. The film was based on the writings of Mohammed al Maghout, and directed by and starring Dureid Lahham. It tells the story of an Arab citizen who loses his identification papers while crossing the border between two imaginary countries, «Westistan» and «Eastistan», and is forced to live on the border.

At Shoman Foundation,  the Serbian film The Shutka Book of Record will be screened (Tuesday, 6:30 pm). The film is a light-hearted look at Shutka, a town in the Balkans that boasts the largest Roma (gypsy) population in the world. The town is full of unique personalities, all of them claim to be «champions» of something, be it goose fighting, vampire hunting or music collecting.
