جندي في المارينز يلاحظ التأثيرات المذلة للإنسان التي تسببت بها حرب فيتنام على أقرانه المجندين بدءا من تجهيزهم الوحشي في معسكر التدريب وصولا إلى قتال الشوارع الدموي في فيتنام.
يتابع الفيلم مجموعة من الشبان المتحمسين وهم يتحملون مسارات التدريب في سعيهم لأن يصبحوا من رجال المارينز، ولاحقا، جنودا في فيتنام.
في النصف الأول من الفيلم يعاني المجندان جوكر وبايل من الإرهاق الذهني والجسدي الناتج عن توجيهات الرقيب هارتمان. تجري احداث النصف الثاني في فيتنام. يلتحق المجند جوكر بساحة المعركة ليشارك مباشرة في مجازر وفظائع الحرب.

A U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the U.S.-Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.
Full Metal Jacket follows a group of aspiring young men as they endure the trials of basic training in their quest to become Marines and, ultimately, soldiers in the Vietnam War. In the first half of the film, Privates Joker and Pyle struggle through the mentally and physically tiring stresses, which were intensified by the strict guidance of Sergeant Hartman. The second half of the film is set in Vietnam. Privates Joker go out into the field to get a firsthand account of the bloodshed and atrocities of war.
