Life is elsewhere: Session 2 – “Men in the Sun”

October 18, 2014 @ 4:00 pm

Saturday October 18 at 4:00 PM at the Lab

The second session of the series “Life is Elsewhere: Rehousing Home and Redefining Identity”

Throughout this series, writer and assistant professor Dr. Akram Al Deek questions the politics of home and identity and microscopes themes of exile and displacement through selected novels and their cinematic adaptations.

In the series, Dr. Al Deek will focus on the following novels; Brick Lane (Monica Ali), Men in the Sun (Ghassan Kanafani), Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys), Midnight’s Children (Salman Rushdie), White Teeth (Zadie Smith), Sour Sweet (Timothy Mo), and The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini).

This series is open to all, and attendance of previous sessions is not mandatory.

Men in the Sun:

An example of the literature of resistence, Kanafani follows the lives of three refugees seeking to ‘get out’ of a refugee camp in Lebanon and ironically die on their way out. The focus here will be on what it means to be a Palestinian (refugee) and what are the different meanings of diaspora.
