إنه بانفيلو – الصديق الوهمي لـ مايكل – الذي يتنبأ بالأمر. في حين يتماشى جد مايكل مع خيال حفيده، يعارضه والد مايكل -جيوفاني- ليجد نفسه هو الآخر ينجرف في مخاوف ابنه وعزلته شيئاً فشيئاً.
بانفيلو قصة خرافية لثلاثة أجيال من الرجال وتوصلهم لتصالح مع فكرة الفقدان والموت في المناطق الريفية في إيطاليا.
