Franco-Arab Films, New Exhibitions, and Art Talks in Amman This Week

The Franco-Arab Film Festival continues this week with an intensive schedule of screenings in different venues across Amman. With up to three screenings every night, the festival will bring the latest French productions, including Kirikou et les Hommes et les Femmes, Le Sac de Farine (The Bag of Flour), Le Professeur (The Professor), The Lebanese Rocket Society and many more. Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation is screening the 2009 Canadian film, Polytechnique, which is inspired by the tragic school shooting that took place at Montreal’s Polytechnique School in 1989 targeting female students. (Tuesday at 6:30 pm)

“East Bank – West Bank” photography exhibition by Charlotta Sparre, Swedish Ambassador to Jordan, opens this Monday at Jacaranda Images. The Swedish photographer has lived from almost 25 years in the Middle East and North Africa, working and studying issues related to the region. Through her photography, Sparre explores both the cultural similarities and differences between the two sides of the Jordan River.

Eyad Almasri’s solo exhibition titled “Human, Place and Myth” will open at Foresight32 Gallery this Monday. Almasri’s work is characterised  by the motif of ancient symbols and seals as well as early Arabic calligraphy and cuneiform inscriptions. Almasri’s art is not just painted on canvas, but is rather sculpted and carved into wood, giving each piece a three dimensional aspect.

Darat al-Tasweer is showcasing the photographs that resulted from its team’s participation in the Dask-Dogay nature shoot competition in Turkey. A collection of photographs from the Palestinian team will also be exhibited side by side the work of eleven nascent Jordanian photographers.

The 2012-2013 recipient of the Khalid Shoman Foundation Darat al-Funun Dissertation Fellowship for Modern and Contemporary Arab Art, Holiday Powers, will talk about her research in Amman on her dissertation titled “Creating New Relationships through Art: Modern and Contemporary Art in Post-Colonial Morocco.” (Tuesday at 6:30 pm)

On the occasion of World Refugee Day, Activista Arabia is organising a concert by local bands Random House and Perfect and Insane, at Al-Balad theatre. Free entry. (Thursday at 6:30 pm)
